Skjervøy or Tromsø: where to go to swim with orcas?
Both names come up constantly when planning this trip. They are not the same thing, and the choice has real consequences for your days.
This is the question that comes up most after "which season". The confusion is understandable: both towns appear in almost every offer, often in the same sentence.
Two places playing different roles
Tromsø is the region's main city: an international airport, hotels, restaurants, and most of the tour operators in the Far North. It is where everyone arrives, you included.
Skjervøy is something else: an island and a fishing village, a few hours further north, in the middle of the fjords where the herring overwinter. Few inhabitants, little infrastructure — and the animals right there.
What your base really changes
Whales move with the fish, and the area where they concentrate varies from season to season. In recent years it has been in the fjords around Skjervøy rather than on Tromsø's doorstep.
The consequence is arithmetic. Leaving from Tromsø when the animals are further north means spending part of the day travelling out, then back — on winter days that hold only a few hours of light. Being based in Skjervøy means leaving the harbour and looking for animals almost immediately.
Over several days that gap compounds: for the same number of outings, the time actually spent watching is not the same.

If your plan is to discover the region and add a wildlife outing to it, Tromsø is a logical base. Our approach is different: the trip is built around the animals, not around a town.
Our choice, and why
We settle in Skjervøy for the whole trip, in a house reserved for the group. That choice costs one transfer from Tromsø on arrival — about 2 h 15 by express boat — and gives up the comfort of a city. In exchange it buys time on the water, the only luxury that counts here.
